Sony says PS5 is now more profitable than any PlayStation console before it, and PS6 is on the way

PlayStation 5 has been Sony's "most profitable generation" for its consoles to date, the company confirmed in a business meeting today.

The PS5 has generated $136 billion in sales for Sony thus far, creating an operating income of $13 billion, both of which are an increase from the PS4, which generated $107 billion in sales and $9 billion in operating income. This also means that PS5 has been more profitable than PS1, PS2, PS3, and PS4 combined.

And so, of course, PlayStation will be back again for another round of console gaming goodness. The PlayStation 6, or whatever Sony decides to call it, is still a couple of years out, at least. While the company did not give any specifics during the presentation, it did hint at what to expect for its next generation.

"Our console business has evolved into a multi-faceted platform, and we now have a large ecosystem of highly engaged players across both the PS5 and PS4 generations, so naturally, there's a huge interest in our next-generation console strategy," CEO Hideaki Nishino said. "While we cannot share further details at this stage, the future of the platform is top of mind. We are committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services."

For the first time ever, there are more monthly active users on PS5 than PS4, Sony confirmed during the presentation, and 38 percent of all users are subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra, the two higher-cost tiers of the online service.

In short, Sony says that things are looking good for PS5, looking ahead to exclusive games like Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach for 2025. Beyond, it touted Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet and Marvel's Wolverine as two more big single-player titles on the way, along with upcoming live service titles Marathon and Fairgame$ as more reasons to buy into the PlayStation ecosystem.

Beyond that, however, we may be looking at the beginnings of the PS6 generation sometime in 2027 or 2028.
