Sony Michel, Demaryius Thomas among 6 Patriots to start training camp on PUP

The New England Patriots had rookies and returning injured players reporting for training camp on Sunday. While a handful of important players, like safety Patrick Chung and tackle Isaiah Wynn, were cleared to play, some were placed on the physically unable to perform list.

According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, here’s a list of the players who landed on the PUP list: RB Sony Michel, WR Demaryius Thomas, DE Deatrich Wise, S Nate Ebner, T Cole Croston, CB Ken Webster. Offensive tackle Yodny Cajuste, a 2019 third-round pick, will open training camp on the active/non-football injury list. He underwent quad surgery this offseason.

All these players are eligible to return to the field at any time.

While it’s bad news these players won’t participate at the start of camp — particularly for Michel and Thomas, who need to develop rapport with Tom Brady in the passing game — Wynn’s return to the field will be a bright spot. He is pencilled in as the team’s left tackle after the departure of Trent Brown, who was a one-year stopgap after Nate Solder departed in 2018. Wynn, a 2018 first-round pick, finally gets a shot at the left tackle position — he dropped out of the running for the position in 2018 because he missed his entire rookie season with a torn Achilles.

The team’s first practice is Thursday.
