Sony announces PlayStation Studios brand to launch alongside PS5

Sony has announced a new umbrella brand to cover all of its first-party PlayStation exclusive titles.

The PlayStation Studios brand is set to go live later this year, to coincide with the release of the PlayStation 5 console and it will only feature games developed and managed by Sony.

The news was revealed by PlayStation on Twitter and first reported by GameIndustry.biz. As well, there was a video reveal, in a Marvel-esque style, which showcased characters including Nathan Drake, Ratchet, Kratos and more, who all hail from PlayStation exclusive titles.

Speaking to Game Industry, Sony's senior vice president Eric Lempel said: “Over the last few years — and even the last decade — the strength of the titles coming out from our studios has been stronger than ever. We have been thinking about how we unite all of these great games under one brand."

The nice little animation does draw some comparisons to not only Marvel but also the new Xbox Studios brand logo, with the goal pretty much being to ensure you know exactly who is responsible for what you're playing.

Sony's PS4 games will also carry the PlayStation Studios branding, but it won't be ready in time for the launch of The Last of Us: Part II or Ghosts of Tsushima.

Alongside games developed by Sony's first-party studios — such as Naughty Dog, Insomniac and Guerrilla Games — the PlayStation Studios brand will also apply to games made by work-for-hire developers under Sony's direction.

Sony's PS4 exclusives have certainly been exceptional throughout the console's lifetime, having the likes of Uncharted, Horizon: Zero Dawn and, of course, the upcoming Last of Us sequel, jumping leaps and bounds ahead of rivalling Xbox exclusive titles.
