Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer 2019: Sonic's new look divides fans in first clip with Jim Carrey

The trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog has been revealed, offering the first look at the new movie.

The live-action animation hybrid sees the classic video game character handed his own film for the first time ever.

The new clip shows the speedster teaming up with local sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), before going up against eccentric villain Dr. Ivo Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey.

As well as showing off Sonic's incredible speed, the trailer offers a first glimpse at Sonic’s new look, which already seems to be dividing fans online.

The character is a lighter blue than in the classic incarnations, while the new furry coat is another slightly disconcerting addition, given it is traditionally untextured.

The new take on the character has provoked some strong reaction online. See some of the best below.

Neal McDonough and Tika Sumpter star alongside Carrey in the movie, while Ben Schwartz provides Sonic’s voice.

Sonic has been one of the most popular video game characters since 1991, when it was created by Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima and Hirokazu Yasuhara. It quickly became synonymous with the success of SEGA throughout the decade.

Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in cinemas on November 8 2019.
