Sonic the Hedgehog trailer: Jim Carrey, James Marsden and Ben Schwartz star in first look at live-action movie

The first trailer has dropped for Sonic the Hedgehog, giving a first full look at Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz and James Marsden's respective performances.

In the video, released on Tuesday, the video game character's infamous supersonic speed appears to cause a vast power outage across the Pacific Northwest.

The government enlists the help of Dr Ivo Robotnik (Carrey), Sonic's nemesis, to investigate the situation.

Sheriff Tom Wachowski (Marsden) partners with Sonic (voiced by Schwartz) against Robotnik, who appears determined to take over the world.

Neal McDonough also features as US Army Major Bennington, who tries rather unsuccessfully to rein in Robotnik's frantic energy.

Shortly after the trailer's release, viewers seemed surprised both by Sonic's human-looking teeth, which are part of the character's CGI design for the film, and the use of the 1995 song "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio featuring LV.

Sonic the Hedgehog will be released in November in the US and in December in the UK.

The live-action film is a joint American-Japanese production.
