Sonic the Hedgehog movie to change character design after backlash

If you weren't impressed with Sonic's designs in the latest trailer then you're in luck.

There was a distinct backlash to the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie due to the character's designs - prompting quite the reaction on social media , with fans having had a field day already with the image of Jim Carrey in his role as the film's villain, Dr Ivo Robotnik.

Now it has been confirmed by director Jeff Fowler via Twitter that the criticisms regarding the character design have been taken on board and changes will be made prior to the film's release.

Fowler tweeted: "Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be... #sonicmovie #gottafixfast "

It would seem that Paramount Studios and Sega are very clear that they want some happy fans for the movie, and who can blame them?

Sonic the Hedgehog will be voiced by actor Ben Schwartz, while James Marsden appears as as Sheriff Tom Wachowski, alongside Adam Pally, Tika Sumpter, and Neal McDonough.

The plot sees Marsden's character Sheriff Wachowski journeys to assist Sonic in his battle against the nefarious Dr Ivo Robotnik.

Sonic is an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at incredible speed, so will likely need his speedy skills to defeat evil.

Let's hope the film is good outside of the character designs!

Sonic the Hedgehog is released in UK cinemas on December 26, 2019.
