Sonic Team Talks Next Steps for CrossWorlds and Future Racing Games

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launched to high critical acclaim, while also receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from players on Steam. With a strong post-launch roadmap highlighting a bunch of content, the Sonic Team isn’t slowing down anytime soon. In an interview with Polygon during the Brazil Game Show, series producer Takasi Iizuka reflected on the game’s strong launch, community response, and what comes next.

“We really appreciate all the positive comments we’ve gotten from fans and from reviewers. People really like the game, which gives us the confidence to continue making more content.”

The producer also revealed that the development for CrossWorlds began during Sega’s internal restructuring during the COVID era. This restructuring brought the Sonic team together with the Sega arcade racing division. The result is a game where driving feels as thrilling as running through Green Hill Zone.

What’s Next For Sonic Racing CrossWorlds?

CrossWorlds has been a surprising hit, combining Sonic’s trademark speed with the precision and depth of a proper arcade racer. This direction of the game was immediately obvious to me during my first impressions of CrossWorlds. Iizuka says there’s still more to come: “We have one year of DLC, we could do year two, we could do year three. Tell us what you want!”

We just received the Minecraft DLC pack and festival a couple of days ago, which was quickly followed by the Hatsune Miku event. A free update to the game also just added Joker from Persona 5. We also know that they’re planning a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Avatar Legends collab for 2026. Other confirmed collabs include Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Proto Man.

The team is committed to adding new tracks and gadgets, too. Iizuka says they are also open to changing the balance of the game depending on player feedback. With Sega ready to commit to up to three years of support (or more), there is a chance this game evolves into a true live-service racers with constant updates.

Maybe they introduce adjustable handling at some point, or even different drift profiles for different characters. The Rival system is already interesting as is, but with more dynamic in-race banter and rival bonuses with some mini stories thrown in, it can become even better. One thing they definitely can expand on is the rank system, which, for now, feels like it’s only built for unlocking stuff instead of real competitive play. There is still a lot of untapped potential here, so let’s hope the team is actually dedicated to working on bold changes rather than just talking themselves up.
