Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George: Jake Gyllenhaal to star in musical at the Savoy Theatre

Jake Gyllenhaal is returning to the London stage to star in Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George.

He will appear alongside Tony Award winner Annaleigh Ashford in a limited 12-week run at the Savoy Theatre from June next year.

Tickets go on sale today for the musical, which follows artist Georges Seurat as he works on completing his most famous painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.

Gyllenhaal and Ashford originally starred in a concert version of the show in 2016, returning to the production a year later under the direction of Sarna Lapine. Lapine, the niece of Sondheim’s co-writer James Lapine, also directs the West End revival.

Gyllenhaal said: “Performing Sunday in the Park with George with the brilliant Annaleigh Ashford was one of the greatest joys of my career. I've also deeply missed the West End and so to be bringing Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical there alongside Annaleigh is both humbling and thrilling.”

Gyllenhaal made his theatrical debut in 2002 on the West End in Kenneth Lonergan’s revival of This Is Our Youth at the Garrick Theatre and won the Evening Standard Theatre Award for outstanding newcomer.

Preview performances will begin on June 11 2020, with the production's official opening night yet to be confirmed.
