Son of tragic Scots OAP who died after flat fire hails three heroes who tried to save him

Three heroes who tried to rescue a Dumbarton pensioner from his burning flat have been hailed.

Allan Wilson has thanked local men who pulled his father, Willie Wilson, out of his home on Round Riding Road .

Sadly Willie, 72, passed away in hospital but the family were able to say their goodbyes with Allan full of gratitude for the “brave actions” that made this possible.

Emergency services were called to the blaze on Round Riding Road on Thursday evening.

But before they arrived neighbours had rushed to the aid of Willie, originally from Brucehill.

Allan said he is still trying to track the men down but knows a taxi driver named Davie, another resident and a man called Richard Feasby - who forced the window open - all helped his dad

Allan said: “I want to thank the guys who helped my dad out of the flat, without those brave actions, the family wouldn’t have been able to say their goodbyes or see you later.

“Also, to the emergency services, his sister Marie, Irene, and nieces Joanne and Andrea, for all the help my dad received from them in his later years, it was appreciated.

“I would like to thank all my friends and family for the kind words we’re all receiving daily.

“Finally, another thanks to his carers who he had a good relationship with.”

People took to Facebook to offer their condolences and praised those who tried to rescue him.

One person said: “Terrible news. Amazing bravery shown by those who managed to get him out of the flat.”

Police Scotland have confirmed that enquiries are ongoing into the cause of the fire, however there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

Area Commander Kenny Barbour from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spoke of the incident and offered condolences to the family.

He said: “We were alerted to reports of a fire at Round Riding Road, Dumbarton on Thursday, June 2 at 7.33pm.

“Operations Control mobilised five fire appliances and crews extinguished a fire within a flat.

“Sadly, a male occupant within the flat has passed away.

“Our thoughts and condolences are very much with his family, friends and the wider community at this difficult time.”

A report will be forwarded to the procurator fiscal.
