Son of Sophie Toscan du Plantier recalls heartbreaking moment he found out about mum's death

The son of Sophie Toscan du Plantier has appealed to the Irish people to come forward now with any information they may have in relation to the murder of his mother 25 years ago.

Appearing on The Late Late Show, Pierre-Louis defended the French justice system in their decision to convict Ian Bailey of his mother's murder in absentia.

Mr Baudey-Vignaud appealed to the Director of Public Prosecutions to reconsider their decision not to charge Bailey.

The former journalist, 64-year-old Ian Bailey, was convicted in his absence of Sophie's murder in Paris in 2019 and was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Despite this conviction in France, Ireland refused to extradite Mr Bailey.

Speaking on The Late Late Show, Mr Baudey-Vignaud said: “The French court said two years ago that Ian Bailey is guilty, the French investigation was of more than ten year's duration."

He added the French investigative team had worked very closely with gardaí.

He said: “The verdict in France was very powerful because they said Ian Bailey is guilty and must go to jail for 25 years …. I’m not saying he is guilty, the French are saying he is guilty, and when you see all the files, I think Ireland …. must go to trial soon, the elements of the files are unambiguous."

Mr Bailey has always maintained his innocence and denied any involvement in the murder.

Sophie’s son recalled the night he received the news that his mother had been murdered in Skull, Co. Cork, saying it was the "last evening of childhood."

The heartbroken son said he knows people have information that could help the investigation and appealed to people to come forward.

He said: "It’s been 25 years, the truth has not arrived yet - we must end this story - for me, for my mother, for Irish people… You, the Irish people, you have a murderer living in Ireland.”

He added: “My mother was found dead with the complete body destroyed... Her face was … destroyed by stones. She was almost naked in the land, with scratches on the face and on the body.

“Please for you, for me, for my mother, for the justice - for all the women who are living in this country, we must end this - please call me, send me an email or go to the gardaí, for sure, you (who) know something.”
