'Son of Sam' killer David Berkowitz recovering from complications due to heart surgery

NEW YORK _ "Son of Sam" killer David Berkowitz was recently re-hospitalized following a heart procedure but is on the mend and "confident God is watching over him," his attorney said Tuesday.

Berkowitz's murderous reign shook New York City in 1976 and 1977. He is serving six consecutive life sentences for late-night shootings with his .44-caliber Bulldog revolver that killed six people and wounded seven.

In December, Berkowitz, 64, was transferred to an Albany hospital for emergency heart surgery.

His attorney, Mark Heller, told the Daily News that complications resulted from the operation. Berkowitz required an additional procedure on Jan. 21 to "drain his legs" and treat circulation problems, according to Heller.

Berkowitz returned to Shawangunk Correctional Facility five days later.

"He seems to be doing well," Heller said.

The attorney had been notified of Berkowitz's health woes by the killer's spiritual supporters, who frequently visit him in prison.

Berkowitz became a born-again Christian behind bars and refers to himself as "Son of Hope."

"He basically is a proponent of people turning away from evil," Heller said.

The stress of a transfer from Sullivan Correctional Facility to Shawangunk was a factor in the stress on Berkowitz's heart, Heller said.

"He's very hopeful and confident God is watching over him and will protect him from any maladies in the future," Heller said.
