Son of heir to Earl of Lonsdale dies aged 21 as family pay tribute to 'beautiful soul'

The heartbroken family of a young artist said to have taken his own life after a battle with his "inner demons" have paid an emotional tribute.

Will Lowther, whose father is heir to the Earl of Lonsdale, was just 21 when he died.

His loved ones have described the young painter, who was studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, as a "beautiful soul".

In a statement they said he had died last week with his family at his side.

Will is understood to have had mental health problems since his teenage years.

In a statement to the Daily Mail, his family said: "It is with the deepest sorrow that Jim and Vanessa Lowther and family announce the death of their oldest son Will.

"Will was a beautiful soul. Each and every person who had the pleasure of knowing and meeting him was deeply touched by him...

"Despite fighting courageously for years to battle his inner demons, Will tragically lost that battle last week."

According to a notice in The Times, Will died on January 11 in hospital.

A private funeral will be held to remember him.

The young artist was a member of one of the UK's oldest families, with the Earl of Lonsdale title bringing 30,000 acres of land in the Lake District.

The family have been major landowners since 900AD, while the Lonsdale title dates back to 1784.
