Brian Barry-Murphy, son of Cork GAA legend Jimmy Barry-Murphy, is being strongly tipped to take on a major new role at Premier League giants Manchester City.
The former Cork City, Preston, Bury and Sheffield Wednesday player left the club he has managed for almost three years - Rochdale - last night, Cork Beo reports.
The board of the club said they've "reluctantly agreed" to release the 42-year-old Cork native from his contract at Barry-Murphy's own request.
It's believed that Rochdale would have been very happy to hang on to the young manager despite a turbulent year that saw him struggle as the club were relegated League One.
His contract had been extended for another year in March even though relegation beckoned.
However, reports in England say the Corkman who had an 11-year association with Rochdale as player, caretaker manager and then full manager, could become the next Manchester City under-23 manager.
Barry-Murphy's stylish football philosophy and skills with developing young players are reported to have impressed the premiership giants and manager Pep Guardiola.
Last season, Manchester City sent two young prospects on loan to Barry-Murphy at Rochdale.
He is now reported to be the front-runner to take over as City's next Under-23 coach. It would be a huge step up for the young Corkman who would become a key figure at one of the world's most glamourous clubs.
