Son of a Butcher closed to remodel space, revamp menu

May 11--Son of a Butcher (2934 W. Diversey Ave.) is closed, and the phone is disconnected. But owner Adolfo Garcia says the meat-centric restaurant will reopen -- with a new look and adjusted menu -- in a matter of weeks.

"I just want to remodel it," Garcia says. "I own the building, so I'm by no means in financial trouble."

Garcia, who also owns Pearl Tavern and co-owns (with Phil Stefani) the recently opened Broken English Taco Pub, both in the Loop, says the remodeling will be minor.

"There were a few traffic issues," he says. "The (communal) back room wasn't very functional, so I'm adding more individual tables. And the back patio, I want to 'nice it up' a little."

The time off will also allow Garcia to play with the menu, he says. Local customers in Logan Square have been asking for more meatless choices and lower prices, and the new menu will accommodate those requests.

"It will still be Son of a Butcher," says Garcia, who, truth be told, is the grandson of a butcher. "But the menu will be more balanced, and I'll keep it casual. The place is very bohemian, and I intend to design it like that."

Son of a Butcher, Garcia says, should return in early June.
