Son left heartbroken after finding mother and teenage sister dead inside his burger van

Condolences have been paid after the bodies of a mum and daughter were discovered in a burger van.

Leah Churchill (50) and her daughter Brooke Wanstall (17) were found in the van in Whitstable, Kent, on Tuesday morning.

Tyla Wanstall, Brooke's brother said he found them both, The Mirror reported.

The pair are believed to have suffered carbon monoxide poisoning from fumes coming from a generator in the van.

At the time they died they were putting up decorations for Tyla's 26th birthday.

"They were decking the van out inside in balloons and bunting as a birthday surprise for me, like my mum would do at home every year," he said.

He said when he first opened the door he thought they were sleeping.

"I smelt fumes but it just didn't register straight away, but it became obvious they were both dead.

"I called the police and ambulance but it was the firefighters who told me it was likely carbon monoxide poisoning."

He said he is "heartbroken" to think how they both died.

Leah, from Canterbury, had two other children and had been helping Tyla by working in the van two days per week.

She had just recently completed GCSEs.

"She had her whole life in front of her," he said.

"She did really well in her grades and had just started work as a carer, which she was really enjoying. She was also due to take her driving test next week."

Tyla asked people to be aware of this "serious killer." "I don’t know how we're ever going to get over this," he added.

The local coroner is due to receive files on Leah and Brooke's death.
