A 42-year-old man was arrested in Chiang Rai on Tuesday morning after two members of his wife's family were shot dead and two others, including his wife, critically wounded.
The alleged gunman, Kritchakorn Sitthikhankaew, was arrested in Wiang Chiang Rung district about 6.30am on Tuesday by a team of provincial, Wiang Kaen and Wiang Chiang Rung police. They also seized a firearm believed to have been used by the shooter.
His arrest followed a fatal shooting at a house in tambon Muang Yai in Wiang Kaen district of the far-north province on Monday night. It was reported to Wiang Kaen police station about 9.45pm.
Police sent to the scene found four people with serious gunshot wounds. They were rushed to Wiang Kaen Hospital.
Two later died from their injuries. They were identified as Supannee Woraphat, 55, the suspect's sister-in-law, and Kriangsak Nimnuan, a member of the same family.
Two others remained in critical condition, the suspect's wife, Sunida Phasi, 52, and her 29-year-old son from a previous marriage, Sirak Phasi.
Mr Kritchakorn was charged with premeditated murder and carrying a firearm and ammunition in a public area without permission or reasonable cause.
He was handed over to investigators at Wiang Kaen police station for legal proceedings.
Police were continuing their investigation into the motive for the shooting.
