Son Heung-min receives 12-second Instagram message from Jose Mourinho after winning Puskas award

Son Heung-min's solo effort in Tottenham Hotspur's 5-0 win over Burnley last season has been announced as the best goal of 2019.

On Monday evening, the Best Fifa Football Awards returned as football's world governing body handed out seven prizes to reward the very best the men's and women's game had to offer.

This included the Puskas award for the best goal scored of the year.

And shortly after 6pm it was announced that Son had been crowned the winner of the Puskas Award 2020 for his superb strike against the Clarets all the way back in December 2019.

Son picked up the ball on the edge of Spurs' penalty area and then set-off towards the Clarets' goal. He slalomed his way through Burnley's team and tucked the ball home past Nick Pope.

Speaking after the game, the 28-year-old admitted it was the best goal of his career.

"I think it is the best goal in my life," he admitted. "I don't know what happened until the end!

"When I got the ball l tried to pass to Dele Alli and waited for his movement.

"But I couldn't find him so I just went and went. I'm happy to score this goal."

One of the first people to congratulate Son on winning the award was none other than his Spurs boss.

Taking to social media after the announcement, Mourinho had a 12-second message for the South Korea international.

"Going home and watching FIFA TV, " Mourinho said in an Instagram post. "Sonny, Puskas award, the best goal of the season.

"Of course, Sonny."

In winning the award, Son fended off a number of nominees including Jordan Flores' stunning volley for Dundalk against Shamrock Rovers in the Irish league, Barcelona's team goal vs Mallorca, finished off by Luis Suarez, and Giorgian de Arrascaeta's overhead kick for Flamengo against Ceara in Brazil, among others.

Votes from FIFA.com users then whittled these down to a final trio.

And Son was announced as the winner with 50 per cent of the vote coming from football fans and the other half by a panel of football experts.
