Son Heung-min was given a standing ovation for his man of the match performance as finally Tottenham showed some authority.
Son was on target in what was ultimately a comfortable victory but the first time that Spurs have won by more than a one goal margin in the Premier League this season.
Tottenham are still finding their way and some much-needed confidence under Antonio Conte and they were probably grateful for such willing opponents in Brentford.
Conte himself punched the air at the final whistle, relieved this time there were no mistakes or errors just a straightforward victory for a change.
Spurs boss Conte has described this as his biggest ever challenge in management and it is safe to say it was never that difficult on this occasion.
Instead, they got a gift of an own goal and Brentford who never looked like causing major problems and you do wonder, for all their early season optimism and promise, whether they could yet find themselves in danger further down the line.
Brentford were too passive, top scorer Ivan Toney did not get enough service and they made it too easy for Tottenham who really should have scored more goals.
If Harry Kane had been anywhere near his best then he could have feasted on some goals while Brentford keeper Alvaro Fernandez made some good saves to keep the score down.
It looked like it was going to be a long night for Brentford from the start. Kane led an early charge, fed Lucas Moura and his shot was beaten away by Fernandez with a smart save.
Tottenham went ahead after just 12 minutes as Son worked a short corner routine, then Son put over a cross which Pontus Jansson tried to had clear, the ball hit Sergi Canos and then cannoned into the Brentford net.
The stadium announcer gave the goal to Ben Davies who did not really play any part apart from being in the penalty box melee.
Tottenham were well on top, the stadium was loud and even Conte looked relatively calm on the bench as the visitors spent most of the half just chasing shadows.
Brentford started the season so well, got a good win over Everton last weekend and they will be grateful for a bit of breathing space above the relegation zone on nights like these.
Tottenham could have easily gone further ahead as Fernandez pushed Son’s 25 yard drive away and then the Brentford keeper bravely blocked Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s close range effort.
The pressure was just non-stop. Kane was denied by Fernandez, the Brentford keeper made another good stop from Davies and then Hojbjerg should have scored but hit the side netting.
Finally Tottenham got their deserved second. Kane found Sergio Reguilon and his super pass left Son with a simple finish. Son was substituted towards the end and was applauded off for his all action display.
Brentford did summon some late pressure as Ivan Toney caused problems but by then it was too little too late as the damage was done.
