Son drowns trying to save dad who walked off boat overnight thinking he was home

A 34-year-old man died trying to save his dad's life who confusedly walked off a boat in the middle of the night.

Jeremiah Israel has been identified as the victim found in West Point Lake near LaGrange, Georgia.

He had jumped in the water after his 62-year-old father, who reportedly woke up needing the toilet between Sunday and Monday.

Thinking he was at home, the dad walked straight off the boat aiming to head towards the bathroom, reports said.

Tragically, the son did not resurface after going in the lake to rescue him.

Tributes have been paid to Jeremiah online, calling him a "sweet person".

The pair were on a fishing trip when they got tired and decided to have a nap, the Daily Mail reports.

They were believed to have tied their boat to a bridge before falling asleep.

A group on another boat spotted the dad and helped him back into his boat.

He was taken to a hospital and has since been released.

Jeremiah's body was recovered on Monday near a bridge on the lake, according to reports.

The incident is reportedly being investigated as accidental drowning.
