Son bidding to succeed much-loved dad and become North Lanarkshire councillor

People Before Politics was always his late father’s mantra.

And a Newmains man is hoping constituents will put their faith in him and allow him to claim a by-election victory following the untimely death of his dad.

Robert John McKendrick is hoping to continue the work of his late father, Robert Snr, by taking his seat as an independent elected member for the Murdostoun ward.

Writing on social media, Robbie confirmed his candidacy.

He said: “I have today put forward nomination papers to stand in the by-election for ward 20, Murdostou,n of North Lanarkshire Council on June 24.

“I will be standing as an independent councillor under the banner People Before Politics.

“My intention was originally to wait until the normal council election cycle in May 2022.

“This however, would leave constituents that would rely on an Independent Councillor for help, without representation for almost a year.

“I realise winning a by-election will be difficult, I will need every vote I can get but with the help of the community in Ward 20 Murdostoun, it can be done.”

To be able to participate in this by-election, eligible residents must be registered to vote by midnight on Tuesday, June 8.

Applications for new postal or postal proxy votes and amendments to, or cancellation of, existing postal or proxy votes must be with the Electoral Registration Office by 5pm on Wednesday, June 9.

Applications for new proxy votes must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, June 16.

“To have a say in this by-election, you must make sure you are registered to vote,” said Returning Officer Des Murray.

“It only takes a few minutes now to register online - you just need your national insurance number and date of birth.”

Councillor McKendrick passed away earlier in April at the age of 71.

He was first elected to the council in 2007 as an Independent member, he served with distinction on a significant number of committees including education and families, housing, environmental services and the Wishaw and District Local Area Partnership.
