Son arrested in Calais with mother’s body in car claims she fell down stairs

A Brit arrested on suspicion of murdering his mother in France has told police she “fell down the stairs” hours before dying in the passenger seat of his car.

Simon Odgers, 53, was arrested in Calais on Friday as he tried to board a Channel ferry with the body of Barbara Odgers, 86, next to him. Police said she had died many hours before.

The pair, from Bembridge, Isle of Wight, had spent a couple of days in France, where they own three homes.

Detectives raided one of the properties in the hamlet of Bost, Burgundy, and “found blood on the staircase”, while there was blood in the kitchen at another in Vernon, in the Ardèche.

A source said Mr Odgers has also told investigators that his mother “was already very ill” with cancer.
