Police were called to the property after reports an elderly couple had received serious injuries.

A 42-year-old man has appeared in court charged with murdering his father and attempting to kill his mother.

Police allege Mount Lawley man, Nigel Chaytor, attacked his 72-year-old parents at their Kelmscott home on Friday morning.

Officers were called to the property on Ensign Dale just after 7:00am amid reports a man and a woman had been seriously injured.

Keith Chaytor died that morning, his wife Estelle required emergency surgery.

Dozens of forensic investigators and Homicide Squad detectives spent much of Friday at the scene.

The victims' family released a statement over the weekend through WA Police.

"The family of Keith and Estelle would like to thank everyone for the love and support they have received," the statement read.

"We ask that our privacy be respected during this very difficult time."
