Sommar: Mysterious first tease of Hereditary director's new horror

A24 has offered a first tease of Sommar, the newest horror from Hereditarydirector Ari Aster.

The studio posted an ominous GIF to Twitter, featuring an illustration of young women and girls in traditional clothing, dancing around the Swedish iteration of the maypole.

Aster himself has referred to the film as "Midsommar", and it's not clear whether the GIF is part of an announcement that the film will be retitled.

The director has described the film as a Scandinavian folk horror, centring around a couple who visits a friend's rural hometown in Sweden to attend their famous mid-summer festival, before falling foul of a local pagan cult.

Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Will Poulter, Vilhelm Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, and Ellora Torchia will all star.

Hereditary premiered at last year's Sundance Film Festival, earning critical acclaim from critics and making over $79m on a $9m budget, making it A24's highest-grossing film worldwide.

The post does confirm, however, that Sommar is still on track for 2019 release.
