'Something special' - Nemanja Matic explains why Champions League is so important for Manchester United

Nemanja Matic believes the Champions League can act as another priceless learning curve for Manchester United this season as they look to win their first piece of silverware under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United return to European action on Tuesday night when they host Italian side Atalanta at Old Trafford in their third match of the competition so far this season.

Solskjaer's side fell to a shock defeat against BSC Young Boys on matchday one before beating Villarreal with virtually the last kick of the game last time out.

United will another tricky test against Atalanta in midweek and Matic believes his side will gain valuable experience playing against another strong side from a different European league.

“When you are a kid and you play football, you dream about playing in the Champions League," he told United Review. "I think that is, for every kid, the same. When you hear that song before the game, it’s something special.

“The Champions League is the competition where you can compare your qualities with the best teams in Europe. You also have to travel abroad, to Italy, Spain and to other countries, and that’s a good thing.

"You can see the different ways of football – the Spanish League plays a bit different, the Premier League is different, the Italian league is different. In all these games, you get more experience and can improve as a player.”
