Something is wrong with this basketball ring at Islington

Measured: Naomi Hogan.

A basketball ring at Islington Park is 25 centimetres too tall, Cooks Hill resident Joni Gear says.

"When we measured it, we realised it seemed significantly over the regulation height," Ms Gear said.

She said the hoop was about 330 centimetres tall, rather than the regulation height of 305 centimetres.

"I play a lot of basketball, but I'm completely deterred from playing at the Islington hoop because it's too tall.

"I would really love to start a campaign for council to replace it. You want to encourage people to use the facility."

Ms Gear is advocating for an upgrade "like the impressive courts on Parry Street in Newcastle West, opposite Marketown".

"What they've done with Parry Street is excellent and they're so busy those courts," she said.

Councillor John Mackenzie tweeted about the humorous nature of the hoop being too high, while asking council staff "can we get this fixed?".

A City of Newcastle spokesperson joined the fun, saying: "We will send our tallest employee to Islington Park to test the hoop and if it does require adjusting then we will of course do so".

Gaffe: The tape measure shows the hoop's extra height.
