'Something had to give' - Leon Osman makes Everton claim in wake of Marcel Brands' exit

Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman has given his assessment of Marcel Brands leaving his role as director of football.

In a club statement on Sunday , Everton confirmed that the 59-year-old had left the club and gave their “full support” to Blues boss Rafa Benitez .

Having previously worked with PSV Eindhoven for eight years, Brands arrived at Goodison in May 2018 but has left the club, following Everton’s recent winless run.

Osman discussed Brands’ departure as a pundit on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday night and admitted he was not surprised by the decision.

“I think something had to give, it’s certainly not working out at Everton at the moment,” he said.

“[They’ve] spent close to £300million since he joined the club and you have to say, not all of them, being generous, have been a success. I think Everton have overspent.

“I wouldn’t say there’s a clear strategy around those signings, they’re not all working all off the same style of play.”

Have your say on what is going on at Goodison in our big Everton survey:

Having arrived at Everton three years ago, Brands did help bring Richarlison, Lucas Digne and Abdoulaye Doucoure to the club, among several others.

However, big-money arrivals, such as Moise Kean and Jean-Philippe Gbamin have not proven to be successful with the Blues, leading to criticism of Brands.

The Dutchman also worked with Marco Silva, Carlo Ancelotti, and Rafa Benitez during his time at Goodison, resulting in various recruitment strategies.

Though Osman admitted that the managerial changes had not helped, the ex-Blue said he felt it was Brands’ responsibility to ensure the club had a consistent plan.

“I think the whole point of a director of football is to keep the strategy the same,” he told Mark Chapman on Match of the Day 2.

“Everton have had two now - Steve Walsh before him, Marcel Brands - both have been considered failures.

“The buck was going to stop with him and now they’ll look to try and find the answers why.”
