Alexandre Lacazette then won a penalty after former Tottenham defender Danny Rose brought the Frenchman down in the penalty area.
However, club-captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was unable to convert the spot-kick, with Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster denying the Gabonese frontman from 12 yards before collecting the rebound, keeping the scoreline at 0-0 after 45 minutes.
Arsenal supporters then took to social media to question head coach Mikel Arteta, claiming that the Spaniard should give penalty duties to the aforementioned Lacazette given his impressive record from the spot.
The former Lyon striker has taken eight spot-kicks for the Gunners, finding the back of the net on all eight occasions. Comparitvely Aubameyang has now found the back of the net from ten of his 14 penalties for the north Londoners, making the decision to give the penalty to the 32-year-old even more baffling.
