Someone reckons they've hacked the Metrolink Get Me There app - and can generate free tickets... police are now involved

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) bosses have reported a social media thread to police after supposed 'hackers' claimed they could generate codes on the Get Me There app to get free tickets.

It is unclear whether the hackers were successful, but the 'attempted fraudulent' activity has been reported to GMP, TfGM said.

Bosses reassured passengers that no customer data has been compromised.

Get Me There allows passengers to use their phone to buy digital tickets.

Travellers then show a QR code to inspectors when they board the tram.

Supposed 'hackers' claimed they had found a way to generate these QR codes so passengers could download them and travel for free.

Transport for Greater Manchester’s Head of Metrolink, Danny Vaughan, said: “We have been made aware that there has been attempted fraudulent activity relating to the Get Me There app and we have reported the matter to the police.

“We want to assure customers that the security of customer data is paramount and we have been informed by our suppliers that no personal data has been compromised.

“Customers will be able to continue to purchase tickets as usual.”

In July, Metrolink launched a contactless payment system.

Passengers can now touch-in and touch-out with their bank card at the start and end of their journey, instead of buying a ticket.
