‘Someone put the wrong tag’: Woman finds $4,000 Goyard bag at T.J. Maxx. Then she gets it for $39. Is it real?

Maison Goyard makes bags that are the object of desire of many fashionistas. For those on a budget, the price point of upwards of several thousand dollars places these luxury items well out of reach.

One woman may have made the shopping find of a lifetime. She says she found a Goyard bag at discount retailer T.J. Maxx for just $39.

In a TikTok with 2.5 million views, @tasheart shares the moment she spotted the bag.

“Unbelievable… I found a Goyard purse for $39 at T.J. Maxx. This bag retails for $4,000,” she writes in her post.

@tasheart immediately takes the bag to the counter. The clerk seems nearly as excited as she is, saying, “Girl, it caught my eye.”

It appears that the bag is the only one with that pattern on the rack where @tasheart found it.

Her find has people torn between wanting to believe and insisting it’s a fake.

Knockoff or counterfeit?

Knockoffs are a less expensive version of higher-priced items that change a few key details. A Prada, for instance, might be labeled a Brada. Or the pattern shade of a supposed Louis Vuitton might not be anything the brand itself sells. Often, they’re also made of lesser materials.

This doesn’t necessarily guarantee that a brand won’t sue the maker of a knockoff, but it does provide some protection.

A counterfeit, on the other hand, attempts to precisely replicate the real thing. Sometimes counterfeits are sold for close to or at the same price point as the genuine item, and at times to people who are led to believe that it’s the real thing.

The $39 bag @tasheart unearthed at T.J. Maxx does have multiple hallmarks of a genuine Goyard. Even the untrained eye can see that it appears to be its popular Saint Louis pattern, the stitching matches the shade of the genuine artifact, and it seems to have a Goyard logo in the same shade of brown.

These details lend credence to it being authentic.

However, Goyard does not appear to sell Saint Louis bags in the size of the one @tasheart bought at T.J. Maxx. And it’s impossible to tell from the TikTok whether the bag is of the same quality as a Goyard, or if other details that don’t appear in her post match the real thing. The interior of the purse could be the wrong color, for instance, or the material the exterior is made of could be synthetic, rather than Goyardine Canvas & Chevroches Calfskin.

Either way, it has the look of a Goyard, which is kind of the point of carrying one.

People want to believe

Many of the top comments on @tasheart’s post are from people who believe the bag is a real Goyard. Several congratulated her on her luck.

“That is probably the best find at a T.J. Maxx I’ve ever seen,” a believer wrote. “You already have to go to a boutique just to get a Goyard bag, but one with leather detailing is probably even harder to find.”

Another optimist said, “Yeah they definitely put the wrong tag on it. She got blessed.”

Several urged @tasheart to take the bag to one of the six Goyard stores in the U.S. to check for authenticity. But one cautioned, “DONT TAKE IT TO GOYARD!!! If they deem it fake they reserve the right to destroy it.”

Not everyone is convinced, however.

“T.J. Maxx and Marshalls do not sell fake goods,” wrote one. It does seem rather unlikely that a French-made luxury handbag worth thousands would wind up on a rack at a T.J. Maxx. It’s far more likely that the bag is a knockoff.

“Goyard doesn’t sell to third parties lmao,” agreed a second.

Neither T.J. Maxx nor Maison Goyard responded to an email and a message sent via contact form, respectively. @tasheart didn’t reply to a direct message sent via TikTok.
