Someone just graffitied Swansea's 'smelliest lane' with a Sesame Street character who lives in a bin

A graffiti artist has left their mark on a lane branded the smelliest in Swansea , to make a point about what a state it's in

He has sprayed images of Oscar the Grouch and the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street in the city centre lane.

Oscar is a green coloured character who lives in a rubbish bin and even sings the song, 'I Love Trash'.

In the Swansea lane, his image is surrounded by discarded cardboard boxes, food waste, overflowing bins and all sorts of of other rubbish.

The lane, situated between Turtle Bay and Nines Global Buffet restaurants, appears to be a magnet for mess.

And bosses of nearby Cinema & Co, which is next to Nines, are fed up with the situation.

Swansea's smelliest lane ...

Anna Redfern, owner of the independent cinema, gave permission to a graffiti artist to paint the characters there, to make a visible point about the ongoing problem.

"It's pretty grim," Ms Redfern said.

"The graffiti artist who did some work in the cinema for us, saw the article on WalesOnline about Swansea's smelliest lane and wanted to paint the characters of Oscar the Grouch and the Cookie Monster there.

"It sums it up.

"We gave him permission to do it to highlight the disgusting lane.

"Nothing has changed at all. It is probably worse now. There has also been sightings of oils and fats being poured down the drain."

Speaking of the reaction to the graffiti, Ms Redfern said: "People think it's great. It's really drawn attention to the fact we have to live like this."

A spokesman for  Swansea  Council previously said: "We work closely with local businesses who have commercial waste contracts with us to ensure they have adequate bin capacity for the waste they put out for collection.

"Businesses have a duty of care to control their waste and dispose of it via a licensed waste carrier - which could be the council or a private waste contractor.

"They should also ensure they have in place appropriate contracts to cope with the volume of waste they produce."
