Someone has started an Instagram account about Benwell's 'manky' back lanes

To be fair, they probably could do with a filter or two.

But Benwell's "manky" back lanes are now Insta-famous.

Someone has created an Instagram account showcasing some of the dirtiest streets in Newcastle's West End.

And it is pretty grim.

Ripped bin bags and smashed beer bottles are pictured - along with another snap which one follower branded 'dog s*** alley'.

One image simply shows a discarded sanitary product.

The page - which has the tagline 'Showing you the trashy side of Benwell' -  came to light after ChronicleLive highlighted the shocking state of one back alley which locals claim could be the filthiest in Newcastle.

One even quipped it was so dirty the rats even avoided it.

The problem, however, isn't news to Newcastle City Council.

“We are fully aware of the state that some of our back lanes get into as our staff work extremely hard day in and day out clearing them of rubbish which irresponsible people dump - as highlighted by our city-wide anti-litter campaign," said a spokesperson for the authoirty.

“We sympathise with law-abiding residents who care for the environment by disposing of their waste correctly, but back lanes in this area are cleaned every week. Only recently we collected 1.5 tonnes of waste in one day.

“We have a strong enforcement record which residents want to see.

"Last year we brought the third most prosecutions for fly-tipping as a council in the country and always urge anyone who has recently witnessed fly-tipping, or has evidence of fly-tipping, to contact us so we can investigate and prosecute.

"We are grateful to the public for the information they give us as it’s critical to our enforcement operation.”
