Some genius figured out which Newtown pubs are on the lockdown side of King St and which ones aren’t, so do what you will with that information.
On Friday, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed that four local government areas in Sydney will be placed under a formal lockdown from midnight tonight. Those LGAs are the City of Waverley, Woollahra, Randwick and Sydney.
That last one stops right in the middle of Newtown, cutting right down King st in fact. which is now half locked down. It’s now a suburb half in lockdown. Thankfully, if you’re on the right side of King street you can still head to a pub in Newtown. Although, it kind of seems cruel that people can be laughing and drinking on one side of King street, while everyone else on the other has to suffer.
Samuel Hussey, a 7News reporter, is the genius that decided to put together a list of all the Newtown pubs that are closed, and which ones are open.
Open pubs include:
- Courthouse
- Websters
- Kelly’s
- Duke of Enmore
- Carlisle Hotel
- Botany View
- Sydney Park
Pubs closed include:
- Union Hotel
- Townie
- The Bank
- Newtown Hotel
- Marlborough Hotel
- Coopers Hotel
- Imperial
- Rose of Aus
So down to the important stuff. Newtown, in particular King Street, is split between City of Sydney and Inner West LGAs.

This Sydney lockdown has very strong Simpsons vibes. Remember when Springfield was split into both Old Springfield and New Springfield?? Well that’s what’s about to happen to Newtown and I truly hope it ends better than it did on The Simpsons.
The lockdown comes after NSW Health recorded 11 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases today. However, an additional 17 cases have been identified since 8pm last night, which will be included in tomorrow’s tally.
The four inner-city LGAs that will be plunged into a lockdown tonight will only be permitted to leave home for four key reasons.
- Work or study that can’t be conducted at home
- Care or care giving (which includes receiving a COVID vaccine)
- Shopping for essential goods
- Outdoor exercise in small groups of no more than 10
