'Someone could get killed' - Residents worried about drivers breaking speed limits in Wollaton

Angry residents want more to be done to tackle speeding around 20mph roads - warning that "someone could get killed" if action isn't taken.

Nottingham City Council has identified speeding around Woodbank Drive and Grangewood Road in Wollaton as a key issue to address in its most recent ward report for the area.

There are 20mph speed limits in place on both of the roads. But residents say these are "not respected" and that there is no enforcement in place.

Police have said they conducted speeding checks in Grangewood Road during rush hour in November 2019 where they spoke to drivers about their speed levels.

Alan Kirk, 64, of Wollaton, said: "It's scary how quickly some go along the roads around here.

"It's 20mph for a reason. There's a mix of older people and families with young children around here.

"I wouldn't be opposed to seeing a speed camera set up on the roads."

Jane Cook, a 44-year-old private tutor, said: "It's a huge worry for the area. People don't know they are speeding most of the time I'm sure. 20mph is easy to reach.

"Worst case scenario is someone could get killed. I want to see a bit more done in the area whether that be speed cameras or officers coming to monitor it more."

Jess Norton agreed.

The 23-year-old HR consultant of Wollaton added: "The speed limits aren't respected a lot of the time. You only need one silly driver and you could have a tragedy.

"Education is very important in this regard. People may just not know the impact they could have."

What have police said?

Nottinghamshire Police's Neighbourhood Inspector for the area, Gordon Fenwick, said: “Throughout 2019 we conducted several speeding operations in the Wollaton area in response to concerns raised by local residents.

“The most recent operation was done in November, when we carried out a speeding check on Grangewood Road during rush hour.

“The purpose of the operation was to educate people on the dangers of speeding. We stopped 40 drivers and gave them advice on why it is so important to watch their speed.

“One person who was driving significantly over the speed limit was reported for summons and will be dealt with through the courts.

“Nottinghamshire Police takes its role in protecting the public from speeding drivers very seriously, which we do through education, enforcement action and proactive policing operations.”
