Somehow, the driver of this mangled car on the M62 survived... not only that, they're now expected to make a full recovery

Police have said the driver of this car - left a mangled wreck after a horror smash on the M62 - will make a full recovery.

Motorway officers shared the shocking image of the badly damaged red car following the collision which took place on Sunday morning.

The smash, which only involved the one vehicle, happened between junction 21, for Milnrow, and junction 22, for Denshaw.

It is understood the car hit a lamp post on the central reservation.

North West Motorway Police said in a tweet the cause of the collision was a 'combination of poor driving and wet weather'.

The driver is expected to make a full recovery.

The driver was taken to hospital by air ambulance (NWMP)

NWMP wrote: "Our officer has been to see the driver today and can confirm that they will make a full recovery.

"The driver and family involved would like to thank those that assisted at the scene and everyone for their well wishes."

Both carriageways on the motorway were blocked while emergency crews attended.

Contractors were also called to repair the damaged lamp post and central reservation.

An air ambulance was called to the scene, but the driver was taken to hospital in a road ambulance.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a collision involving one vehicle at 10.38am.

"We treated a male patient for head injuries.

"The air ambulance did attend, we took him to hospital by the land ambulance."
