Last night RTE aired part one of its two-part documentary series looking into the lives of Ireland’s most wealthy.
The show takes a deep dive into the Sunday Times Rich List to find out which of Ireland’s super-rich made the most money in the past year, counting down the big winners and losers in the four Irish provinces.
Last night the programme delved into the earnings of the likes of Devan Hughe who heads up Buymie, a personal grocery shopping service based in Dublin, and super-successful businessman Dan Kiely, to see how they fared throughout one of the most difficult years in business.
The Covid-19 pandemic hit everyone in Ireland to some degree, and it seems RTE’s docu-series has left a bad taste in the mouths of many who tuned in.
Twitter was rampant with conversation around the show after it was aired on Monday, with one person writing: “RTÉ airing a programme called 'Ireland's Rich List 2021' just feels totally unnecessary at the moment and only seeks to glorify capitalism, but hey, this is the quality content your License Fee is paying for.”
Another said: “Ireland’s rich list..showing all the people who have increased their already grotesque wealth through the coronavirus…a bit obtuse when most of us are NOT in the same or even a smidgen on the same wavelength.”
The comments online seem to echo the same tune with a third person writing: “Watching Ireland's Rich List atm. So glad many of the super-rich have managed to increase their wealth so substantially during a global pandemic.
“Lol JK this is actually nauseating & should never be allowed to happen. The current neoliberal system is defo broken.”
