Some of the best pictures of life in Mansfield in the 1900s

Mansfield is a town that changed dramatically over the years.

By the end of the last century, many of its iconic industries closed or drastically curtailed their production and the pits - which sustained communities in and around the town - had their shafts filled to end its long mining history.

While more recent years have brought change to Mansfield’s high street, seen its market begin to dwindle, and a turf roof added to its bus station, the 1900s was a much more vibrant era for the town.

For around the first half of those years people still lived in rock houses located in caves in the town and people packed out the market for occasions such as royal weddings.

Here are some pictures Nottinghamshire Live collated looking back on some highlights and memorable features of Mansfield in the 20th century.

The pictures date from the mid-1910s up until 1998.
