Many schools are carrying out special lessons and celebrations as excitement about the prospect for England’s first Euros victory grows.

A number of schools are also set to allow for a later start time next Monday so children can stay up to watch the match.

Parents at Mosspits Lane Primary School in Wavertree have been told pupils can come in as late as 10.30am, with a number of other schools believed to but taking similar measures.

The letter to parents said: “It’s 55 years since England reached a major football final so I understand many football fans will be staying up late on Sunday (up to 11pm if the match goes to penalties) to watch the final.

“As it’s such a special occasion I will authorize [SIC] children arriving at school late on Monday 11th July (up to 10:30am). They won’t be marked late or miss any lessons. School will be open as usual at 8:45am to allow children to arrive at the normal time if they so wish.

“Let’s take this as a learning opportunity – pride and resilience but possibly how to deal with disappointment too! C’MON ENGLAND!”

It is believed a number of other schools in the city are planning to allow a similarly timed late start.
