Some Leeds car parks are now offering free parking to all NHS staff

NHS workers can park at NCP car parks in Leeds for free while they work to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

They can park at 150 NCP car parks across the country, including Leeds The Core, Leeds The Markets and Leeds Wellington Place, for no charge until April 30.

Jonathan Scott, chief executive of NCP said; “We salute you NHS, from the bottom of our hearts and want to thank you sincerely for all the work you are doing.

“We hope this gesture helps you focus on your incredible work, and not have to worry about train times and transport restrictions.”

NHS staff who want to park for free are being told to book on the NCP website, at least an hour before they arrive.

They have been treating people for the virus at Leeds General Infirmary and St James's University Hospital and an elderly patient with underlying health conditions died at the weekend.

They have been told that the number of coronavirus cases at hospitals in Leeds is expected to "escalate quite quickly", by Julian Hartley, chief executive of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

There are 29 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Leeds and more than 5,600 across the country. The death toll has reached 281.

The government has closed schools, pubs, restaurants and cinemas in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus and told people to avoid all "non essential contact",  but Boris Johnson has said "tougher measures" could be introduced because people are flouting social distancing guidance.
