Some Greggs shops open for last day of trading despite Prime Minister urging people to stay at home

Some Greggs shops have reopened a day after the Prime Minister asked people in the UK to stay at home.

Despite the company pledging to close its doors on Monday, some stores around the North East opened up on Tuesday morning for the final day of trading.

The branch on Chillingham Road in Heaton was one of the Greggs shops that was open for business in Newcastle.

Customers could be seen going into the shop for their last chance to gets a Greggs treat for the foreseeable future.

However, they were asked to pay by card to avoid staff having to handle money.

The shop on Shields Road in Byker was also believed to be open on Tuesday.

On Monday evening, Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out new restrictive measures to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

He said people should not leave their homes except to travel to work, get essential shopping or medicine or to exercise once a day.

The company, which has more than 2,000 shops around the UK and employs more than 25,000 people, has confirmed it will close all of its branches by the end of the day on Tuesday.

It is not currently known how many branches opened on Tuesday and how many stayed closed.

Greggs has not been able to say when it will reopen its stores, but it is preparing for the closures to take place for a "prolonged period".

It says the during the last two weeks, the rate of decline in footfall in the shops "has been increasing each day as more and more customers heed the Government advice on social distancing, and we would expect this to increase further if we were to continue to trade".
