Some EC contenders 'in doubt'

Some of the candidates for the Election Commission (EC) are likely to pass the selection while others are not, says National Legislative Assembly (NLA) whip spokesman Jate Siratharanon.

"I think some will pass this round of the EC members selection while some won't. Those who pass can get themselves ready to prepare for the upcoming election," he said of the selection result for the seven-member commission. "There have been at least two candidates who earlier failed the first round of qualifications examination but are now back as nominees," he said.

"If it is a case where the nominees went back to fix certain qualifications such as holding shares in particular industries or companies and have sold it or transferred its ownership, this may be justifiable grounds to overcome the fact they were disqualified earlier," Mr Jate said. The selection must be done more carefully as this is a new round, he said.

A panel led by the Supreme Court president Cheep Jullamon, appointed to select the EC candidates on Thursday, resolved to pick five experts to join the seven-member EC. The decision completes a process to find all commissioners after the assembly of the Supreme Court judges insisted on nominating two judges under its quota though they were earlier rejected by the NLA. Mr Jate said the NLA meeting on Thursday will appoint a committee to examine the candidates.

Scrutiny of the seven nominees would focus on their professional lives. The NLA's selection is expected to be finalised in August, he said.
