Some councillors are set to get a £183 pay rise this year

Some councillors in Merseyside are set to get a pay rise this year.

Elected members of the local authority do not get a salary, but receive an allowance for their work in the local community.

In Sefton, this allowance currently stands at £9,150.71 per year - and if the rise is approved, there will be an increase of £183.

The majority of councillors also have full time jobs, with their allowances supplementing other wages.

Councillors in other parts of Merseyside are paid the following amounts per year, respectively: Liverpool, £10,283; Wirral , £8,712; St Helens , £7,935; Knowsley , £9,478; Halton , £8,597.

A 2% increase in Members' Allowances over the current rate would result in an additional cost to £15,859 for Sefton Council .

At its Independent Remuneration meeting on Thursday, the local authority recommended such an increase, in line with the local government pay offer for staff.

A council spokeswoman said: " Sefton , like all other local authorities, is required to have a Members’ Allowances Scheme whereby councillors are entitled to fair allowances and expenses to cover the basic costs of carrying out their duties.

"This helps ensure people from all walks of life have the opportunity to act as local representatives.

"Allowances recognise that being a councillor has a lot of responsibility attached to the role and recognises the time commitment of all councillors , including such inevitable calls on their time as meetings with officers and constituents and attendance at committee meetings and to cover incidental costs.

"At [yesterday's] panel, it was recommended that the current Members Allowance Scheme remains as it is, with a 2% increase in their allowances this year in line with the local government pay offer for staff.

"The panel has put forward a further recommendation to a change in what the opposition party leaders are paid. They are currently paid £4,575.35 regardless of the size of the party. The recommendation is that any party of 10 or more members be paid £4,575.35 and for a political party with less than 10 they received one tenth of the amount for each member in the group."

The recommendations will be put forward at a Full Council meeting later this year for a final decision.
