But some households may have to repay some or all of theirs, because of a charge that was introduced in 2013.
The High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) is a tax charge that applies to anyone with an income over £50,000 who gets Child Benefit, or whose partner gets it.
You may be affected by the tax charge if your income is over £50,000.
Income includes taxable benefits you get from your job, like a company car or medical insurance.
Your partner is responsible for paying the tax charge if their income is more than £50,000 and higher than yours.
The tax charge increases gradually for taxpayers with incomes between £50,000 and £60,000.
Families can use a Child Benefit calculator to work out how much tax they may have to pay.
HMRC may charge penalties if customers fail to notify them of their liability to HICBC or send an inaccurate return which results in HICBC being unpaid.
