Some 1.4 million cars investigated over ‘potential safety risk’

• Safety regulators have launched an investigation into over 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles following numerous reports of engine failures.
• The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said more than 400 reports of "connecting rod bearing failures" were analysed in 2023.
• These specific failures were found to be outside the scope of a November 2023 Honda recall, which addressed a different crankshaft manufacturing defect in 249,000 vehicles.
• The previous recall highlighted that a seized connecting rod bearing could damage the engine, cause it to stall, or stop while driving, increasing the risk of fire, crash, or injury.
• NHTSA stated that the "significant number" of new engine failure reports indicates a "potential safety risk" requiring further investigation, affecting models from 2016 onwards.
