Solway Orienteers enjoy competition at Kirkcudbright's Silvercraig Wood

Solway Orienteers took part in the October competition at Silvercraig Wood, Kirkcudbright, the club’s most westerly and newest map.

There was a mixture of open fields and intricate woodland. This was another chance for the junior section of the club to step up to the plate when they planned and organised the whole event, supervised by Tim O’Donoghue.

The courses were testing and well received by all who competed and thanks go to them all, especially the youngsters who gave up holiday time and set out controls in the rain the day before.

Winner on the White course was Calum Morrison and his helper. There was a tight finish behind them between Jenna Youngman and Isabel Hanna, with Jenna managing second place.

Edward Hanna was clear winner on the Yellow, ahead of Rory Youngman in second with Eva Currie third.

On Orange, the Hanna family ran round fastest but the results do not say whether earlier individual runs may have helped navigation. Ellie Reid posted the second fastest time with third fastest result going to the pairing of L Morrison and A Ramsay.

John Biggar had the quickest run on the Light Green. Edward Christie’s run into second place won the family contest, beating mum Suzanne into third.

The most difficult Green course was also the most popular on the day and Tom Marshall took the honours ahead of Derek Kennedy with visitor Andrew Armstrong just pipping youngster Sean Findlay to take third spot.

Other neighbouring clubs will be holding events in the next few weeks, so there will be plenty of opportunity for competition before the next Solway event at Markhill, Rockcliffe on November 30.

Full information on upcoming events and orienteering in general is on the club website: www.solwayorienteers.co.uk .

Regular updates can be found on the club Facebook page.
