Solskjaer tells Man Utd to sell £25m Daniel James as Leeds United get green light in shock development - reports

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants the club to sell Wales international Daniel James to help fund the bid for Jadon Sancho, new reports claim.

ESPN say Solskjaer is trying to convince the board to sanction James' exit as he becomes frustrated with the lack of progress over the proposed £100m deal for the Dortmund attacker.

The figure being quoted for James is £25m - more than the £18m United paid to sign him last year, but significantly less than the £69m valuation a transfer study recently put on him. You can read the explanation for the value here.

Leeds United are keen to sign James but had been under the impression only a loan deal would be sanctioned.

Finances are reportedly being tightened at Old Trafford amid the pandemic, with player sales important to any significant outlays.

The report says Solskjaer and his backroom staff have started to come to the conclusion James won't be able to establish himself as a main player at the club in the long term.

He has struggled for form after a bright opening spell following his move and has r eceived often unfair criticism from fans.

During that period, however, he has become an integral part of Ryan Giggs's Wales team.

However, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is said to be reluctant to sanction James' sale having signed James only a year or so ago, believing it would send out the wrong message.

If he were to leave, Leeds would be frontrunners, with Graham Potter's Brighton also known admirers.
