Ole Gunnar Solskjaer accepted the booing from Manchester United supporters following their humiliating defeat by Watford.
Ten-man United were thrashed 4-1 by the promoted side, who had not won at home since the opening weekend of the season, and United have now taken four points from their last 21.
Solskjaer approached the away end at full-time and was specifically and loudly booed by many United fans, which playmaker Bruno Fernandes took exception to. Fernandes appeared to suggest the fans should not boo Solskjaer and blame the players instead before he was ushered away by a teammate and the manager.
"I understand fans who follow the club through thick and thin," Solskjaer said. "They've been fantastic the last few years, it's a difficult period, we've had a hard time since Sir Alex left and fans who've been with us have been unbelievable, understood the situation.
"The signings this summer with Rapha, Jadon and Cristiano have raised expectations, being second we hoped to kick on and at the minute we can't seem to find our form.
"I understand, that's their right to show their opinion. Bruno is such a passionate boy and a man and he knows football can change quickly."
Watford were 2-0 up through half-time through goals from former United targets Joshua King and Ismaila Sarr and, although Donny van de Beek emerged at the pause and scored to spark an improved period from United, Harry Maguire was sent off for two bookable offences.
Joao Pedro and Emmanuel Dennis struck in added time to give Watford a handsome victory and Solskjaer was dismayed by the ease with which the hosts were allowed into United territory.
"Watford away from home, you need to give them a harder time than we did," he acknowledged. "They outfought us, we allowed them to put ball in our box too easily.
"[For the] first goal, Ben Foster was on the halfway line when he puts that ball in. There are so many things can go wrong in football and too many did in the first half."
