The loss to Watford on Saturday afternoon was the final straw for the United board, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set to lose his job.
The 4-1 defeat away from home saw the side slip to seventh and as Solskjaer went to applaud the travelling United fans, he was met with a chorus of boos.
With a compensation package of around £7.75million for the Norwegian, Darren Fletcher is likely to be in the dugout for the upcoming Champions League tie against Villarreal on Tuesday night.

The journey back from Manchester Airport to his home would have been a long one for Solskjaer.
With news breaking over the course of the evening that he was set to be sacked, all that was left for the outgoing United boss was the impeding news.
