Solskjaer names two Manchester United legends he would like in defence in his current team

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised the efforts of Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnsen following their standout display for the club's legends side on Sunday afternoon.

The two United favourites returned to Old Trafford over the weekend as United faced Bayern Munich in a charity match to commemorate 20 years since their famous treble win.

Stam and Johnsen were joined by a host of United legends as they raised funds for the Manchester United Foundation and entertained supporters with a superb team performance.

Goals from Solskjaer, Dwight Yorke, Nicky Butt, Louis Saha and David Beckham secured a comprehensive 5-0 win for a side which was managed by Sir Alex Ferguson on the day.

Speaking after the match, current United manager praised the defensive performance from his side and even joked that Stam and Johnsen were the type of player needed in the first-team.

“Jaap and Ronny,” he told BT Sport when asked which players had impressed him. “We could do with them two at the back!

Despite the tongue in cheek nature of the response United supporters might well indeed hope that the two Treble winners are at the heart of their defence next season.

The clean sheet against Bayern Munich represented only the third time this calendar year that United have not conceded at home in any competition, following a 2-0 win vs Reading in the FA Cup and a goalless draw with Liverpool in the Premier League.
