Manchester City’s 3-1 victory away at Everton on Wednesday night moved them 10 points clear at the summit of the Premier League.
With 14 league matches remaining and the Blues in imperious form, it would take a significant collapse now for them not to end the season as champions.
As recently as January it looked as though fans might be treated to an exciting title race, but City's run of form put pay to any hopes of that happening.
While the league title is virtually out of reach for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, there’s still plenty to play for between now and the end of the season.
Just six points currently separate United in second from Liverpool in sixth, so the race for Champions League qualification could yet go down to the wire.
But not only will United be aiming to secure a place in the top four again - they’ll also have one eye on trying to finish as the ‘best of the rest’ by securing a spot inside the top two.
There is no trophy awarded to the team that finishes second but securing a runners-up spot in the standings would certainly represent progression for United under Solskjaer.
United have finished inside the top two just once since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013, and that came under Jose Mourinho back in the 2017/18 season, an achievement he famously described as one of the best in his career.
But how does this season compare to that one?
As things stand, United are currently six points worse off than what they were at the same stage of that season and based on their current PPG, they are on course to end up with 73 points.
That would be eight fewer than the total they achieved under Mourinho in 2017-18, yet based on the PPG for the rest of the teams in the league, that total would still secure them a top-two finish.
If United could finish inside the top two once again this season, whilst perhaps landing some silverware in either the FA Cup or Europa League, most fans would be satiated.
