Solskjaer held talks with Van de Beek before his Manchester United start against Liverpool

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held talks with Donny van de Beek about his role in the squad before their midweek win over Fulham.

The Dutchman's lack of game time has been a talking point amongst supporters and the media after signing from Ajax for £40million in the summer.

Van de Beek currently finds himself fifth choice at Old Trafford, behind Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Fred, which has seen him used as a late substitute on multiple occasions.

The 23-year-old has started only twice in the Premier League this season but was restored to the starting line up following the discussion to face Liverpool in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Athletic report that Solskjaer held talks with Van de Beek before United's trip to Fulham on Wednesday night about his lack of minutes.

It's claimed that Solskjaer offered reassurances to Van de Beek about his playing time in a brief conversation between the pair.

United have no plans to allow the Dutchman to leave on loan or permanently, having signed a contract until 2025 and with the club competing on three front, Van de Beek's game time is expected to increase.

As part of the negotiations that saw Van de Beek arrive from Ajax, he was expecting to start around half of United's matches but Pogba's return to form has affected those plans, albeit his future is still uncertain at the club.

Equally, the rise of McTominay and Fred as United's preferred double pivot, as opposed to Nemanja Matic as a single 'six' has restricted Van de Beek's involvement.

However, with Europa League, FA Cup and Premier League commitments, Solskjaer has stressed there will be more opportunities to come between now and the end of the season.
